Software is getting more expensive all the time. Some of it is just ridiculously over prices. FREE is better. Linux is a FREE operating system that will run on your computer, new or old. The software is offered free, and is freely distributable (it means you can make copies give it away ). Many people look the gift horse in the mouth and ask, "How can it be any good if they are giving it away." The teams that do these programs cooperate together to build the best operating system and programs they can. They believe software can and should be free. They put their programming code where there mouth is. Many programmers have a "day job" writing for other companies, so they are pro's. Linux comes in many versions. Some aim toward a simple desktop anyone can use. Others aim their package at a students interests. Others target the scientific community, and yet others are setup just for kids. And much more. Basically, you get it your way, and you get it free. What about other needed software? Suse comes with 1100 software packages that you can use. The most simple installs gives you an Office Suite, Email program, browsers, some games, and more. I can't think of a situation where you'd need to buy anything to do anything (for the average-even advanced user). I've been using Linux for about 4 years and have never needed to buy any software yet. Try that with Windoze. You can even run many Windows programs using the Wine Package. It allows you to run many, but not all programs from your Windows machine. even many games! A special note: Until recently, I would not have recommend Linux for novice users, but I think it is just about ready. Default installs of most versions of Ubuntu and OpenSuse 11.2 are so complete, that almost anyone can use them. Just remember that it is NOT Windows and don't try to install Windows programs without some guidance. But then, there is no reason to do so anyway. Everything is free and works. Everything a normal user does is covered with a default install - 'out of the box' as it were. Try it with older hardware. Stuff that barely ran Windows at all will have a new lease on life and seem like new again. Try it, you'll like it. |
