Good Safe Places to Shop Online

Most of you are wary of shopping online.  Good!  There are lots of great places to save lots of money, and other places that will rip you off.

What makes a good store?
Security for my information, good prices, a wide selection of what I want, and a liberal return policy

Here is a list of places *I* use that I would recommend.

For Computer Parts and such

  Newegg.com

This is my favorites site.  I've returned a few items that weren't right, and never had a problem.  Most of the time they have near the best prices available online.  They ship fast!
You will find most any parts for computers here, plus some software.

  Geeks.com

Geeks is a different store.  It is more of a clearance outlet than a regular store.  As a result, sometimes you get great deals here.  Other times, terrible ones.
Watch out for "refurbished"  "open box"  "OEM" and other warnings, unless you know exactly what you want.  I recently bought an P4 IBM machine for $89 with XP Pro installed, legally.  It works great.  You can't beat deals like that! A friend bought another for $139, and it had a Pentium D dual core instead of just a P4 as expected, plus a sata drive and more.

Other than that, fast shipping, I've never needed a return.  I often check this and get their ads (something rarely do).  Sometimes there are really terrific deals.

Check their daily special promo, and you can get some great buys.

  TigerDirect.com

Tiger Direct has good prices, if you comparison shop, and they deliver fast, and are good on returns.  The big problem I have with this site is that most good prices involve Mail in Rebates.   I don't know about you, but I have never had good luck with Mail-in-Rebates.  Still, this is a good place to comparison shop.  I've bought there several times and not been disappointed.  Just be sure you know what you want and read the fine

  Cable and Connector Technologies

has unbelievably low prices on cables and peripherals.   I've used them 2 times and will again.  They shipped within 24 hours and the products were of good quality.   It is a subsidiary of Yahoo somehow.

The prices here are really great. Our local sources want to take your firstborn for a 10 ft. cable. CCT prices are much better. You can save a lot of money here. It is always good to have a few extra USB and Ethernet cables about.

Want to find the latest sales and bargains?

This site tells you of all the sales of tech stuff and allows you search for a particular item and tells you the best price out there.  The prices are often better than the normal price-shopping places.

This site tells you what are the price range of what you are looking for.  They do not always list the absolute lowest price (Geeks and Newegg will beat them sometimes), but it gives you a good idea of what it will really cost.

A Word about Online Shopping

Online Shopping doesn't have to be dangerous, but it can be.  You as a consumer must beware!

First, know where you are shopping.  The ones noted at the left are well known and safe.   Check out dealer ratings.  Keep in mind 5% of all customers are always jerks (except you of course).  So, a 95% rating is pretty good.

Second, make sure that you are on a secure site.  Look at the bottom right corner of your browser.  If there is not a little padlock in the locked position at checkout, don't do it.

Third,  it is a good idea to get a internet only debit card.   Get an account, put only in the account enough to pay for the next purchase.  That way, if your card is stolen or used, it is easy to see and correct.  Better they mess up a rarely used account than a major one.
