Good Free Graphics Progams

I'm not a big user of graphics programs.  I have a few to recommend, but I need to get the other pages working first!  But here's a start.

Graphics Programs

You can spend a ton of money on programs to edit graphics, photos and such.  These programs do it for free, and do it pretty well at that.  Try them.

FXFoto

Download this freeware photo editor and fix all kinds of stuff in your photographs.  This makes even marginal pictures useful.  Crop, edit, whatever you need.  This is a great freebie.

Easy Jpeg Printer

You may have discovered that those sophisticated graphics programs don't make it easy to print snapshots from digital images. This program makes it simple to print 4" x 6" , 3" x 5" or 8" by 10" pictures on one sheet of paper.  Handy, quick and clean.

Paint.Net

This is one I've discovered recently.  I needed to do something that wasn't all that complicated.  But, all the more "capable" programs were just to complicated to work with.   This one is fine for all kinds of simple editing.

Gimp

The GNU Image Manipulation Program is a very powerful program compared often to Adobe Photoshop.  While I'm sure it doesn't meet all the standards of that fine program, but it doesn't cost $600 or more.    Try this for all kinds of image editing.  You'll be surprised at its power.  (This started at a LINUX product).  Remember, all these programs are Free.

What does FREE mean?

There are lots of things called free.

First there is Open Source Software with GNU license.  This is software that is freely distributable, that is, you can copy it or give it away, but not sell it.  Any one can use the code in the program or change the program itself, but whatever they use it in must be free as well.  (This is the best.)

Then there are programs that are free for use, but the copyright is kept by the author.  You can use it, or give it away, but NOT change it.  (This is  second best.)

Then you have Shareware.  The program is free, but after a period of evaluation, they want you to register the copy you own.  Sometimes, it is only a crippled version of program for you to try and decide if it worth the money.  Some shareware is "nagware".  They won't disable the program but you are nagged to register and pay for it every time you use it.  (I hate that.)

When you are getting free software, be sure of what kind it is.  I will seldom deal with nagware.
