Free Utility Programs

There are lots of things that can make Windows easier to use.  Try some of these:

This is a great file utility that lets you copy, move, delete files, etc.  It also can compress and decompress most formats, such as ZIP and RAR files.

This is a MUST HAVE if you do anything other than play solitaire.

This is very similar to Total Commander, but I am beginning to like it better.  Either one is great.  This is newer and a little different in style.

This is a wonderful graphics viewer.  You can see your pictures using this program.  I use this all the time to convert pictures to different formats and resize them, etc.  This is also a MUST HAVE.

The Original Real Player is a fine program, but it is also full of advertising and stuff you don't want to deal with.  If you need to run Real Player files, use this freeware alternative.  Works great and doesn't nag you to buy the "upgrade"

What programs are actually running on your machine?  You will shocked at how many are!  This program lists them all, tells you where they are located, and something about them, and kills them if you like.  Use carefully!  Combine this with ProcessLibrary.com and  you can keep your machine healthy.  I've used it to track down some sneaky spyware and virus programs.

This is for reading electronic books.  It has lots of nice features.  Remember there are thousands of free electronic books online available in the public domain.  I really like this one and it doesn't fuss around so much like Microsoft Reader.  It's clean, neat and compact.  (See Project Guttenberg for thousands of free ebooks.)

Every machine needs this one too.  It lets you read PDF files.  Remember, there are several freebie replacements for this too.  Check the Office Suite page.

Foxit Reader

Foxit Reader is like Adobe Acrobat Reader except that is has more feature, less intrusion into your system, faster loading.  It reads any PDF file and even has a PDF converter/

Do you play any newer games?  Most require the latest version of DirectX.  DirectX 10 is due out soon!

AxCrypt
Need to encrypt files or folders on your computer with your own password?

Sometimes we have information that not everyone in the house needs to read.

AxCrypt will do the trick quickly and easily.  A nice program.

iISystem Wiper

Have you ever need to erase your tracks on your computer?  For instance, your history on Internet Explorer, your latest files used, or purge your multitude of  unwanted cookies?

This a great clean up tool.

CutePDF Reader
Acrobat Reader is  available as a free download.  But there ARE alternatives to it too.

PDF for Free works faster than Adobe. CutePDF Writer allows you write PDF files, something Acrobat won't allow.

Foxit Reader

Adobe takes forever to load unless you leave it running all the time.  Foxit opens in a flash and is just as capable as free Adobe Reader.  Use and never go back to resource hogging Adobe.

Of coure, you find them at Snapfiles.com
